Stark County, Ohio Inmate Search

An inmate search is a public tool for verifying whether or not an inmate is in custody or has been released. It also reveals booking and detention status, helping family members and legal representatives locate individuals within the justice system. Inmate searches are usually conducted using simple details, such as the individual’s name and booking number.

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for maintaining online rosters to facilitate inmate searches. Individuals are free to conduct inmate searches online through the Sheriff’s Office inmate lookup tool. Inmate searches usually reveal the following information:

  • Full name
  • Booking date
  • Booking number
  • Custody status
  • Filed charges.

Alternatively, individuals may contact the county jail at 330-430-3800 or visit the office at 4500 Atlantic Boulevard, Northeast Canton, Ohio 44705.

The Stark County Jail, which is managed by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, handles local arrests within the county. Statewide facilities, such as the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, have a separate Online Offender Search tool for individuals held in custody at state facilities.

As Canton and Massillon are the most populous cities in the County, they have their own police departments. However, both the Canton Police Department and the Massillon Police Department do not operate separate rosters and rely on the Stark County Jail’s official roster. However, the Canton Police Department may provide incident or arrest reports via its public records system.

  2. Locate the "Inmate Search" or "Online Roster" tool.
  3. Input the offender’s first and last name, along with the state and county.

Alternatively, individuals may visit the Sheriff’s Office Records Division in person to request an inmate status lookup.

What Information is Included in the Stark County Inmate Roster

In Stark County, the jail roster often reveals identifying information about inmates deliberately in order to help their family, friends, loved ones, and/or legal representatives be aware of the individual’s status. The following information is often found in inmate search results.

  • Full name: This is the inmate’s official name as listed on official documents such as their birth certificate and their booking information.
  • Booking number: This is a special ID issued to each inmate during the booking process. The booking number helps the jail keep records of all inmates without getting any records mixed up.
  • Arrest date: The county’s online roster also reveals when the inmate was booked and the exact date they were officially handed over to the county jail.
  • Charge Description: This section states the charges an inmate is facing. Charge descriptions in inmate searches are usually brief and include simple phrases such as "misdemeanour, theft, assault, etc." No sensitive details are revealed here.
  • Housing or unit location: This specifies the inmate’s exact location within the jail facility. It often states the inmate’s block or unit number.
  • Custody status: This reveals whether an inmate is still in active custody or has been released. It could also show if an inmate has been moved to another facility.
  • Court Date: If an inmate still needs to appear in court, the court dates will be listed in their search results. However, court dates can change at any time, and inmate search results often take some time to reflect.

Per the Ohio Public Records Act (ORC 149.43), public records are to be made available to the masses upon request. Because inmate records are public records in Ohio, they are not exempt from this law.

Although inmate searches are free, and the information on the online roster is for public use, Ohio law protects certain sensitive parts of records. Inmate rosters often withhold information like medical records, juvenile records, mental health records, and information about ongoing investigations.
